Beryl. It's beautiful blue glow is perfect for a reminder of the waters around St Thomas! It is truly the sailor's lucky stone as it was known to be protective of those working on the water. It was identified with the Apostle St. Thomas, who made long journeys by sea even to India, to preach salvation.
It was considered protective in the Middle Ages where people wore the stone to ward of poisoning. And in Buddhism, it is considered the lovers' stone as it promotes a long and happy marriage. Aquamarine is associated with tranquility, serenity, clarity, and harmony and possesses the healing properties of the sea. Therefore the stress relieving and calming nature of the open waters.
The most common cut of the aquamarine is an emerald cut, to show off a large portion of the gem and the color. It's quite durable and easy to maintain. Just use mild soap and an old toothbrush to clean and rinse in cool water to avoid extreme temperature changes.
